Directional Thinking

Let’s just hit the pause button for a moment on life, and ask ourselves these questions.

In which direction is my mind facing?  What is consuming my head at this moment?

Recently on a TV survival programme, two individuals were tasked with making it through a dense forest with only a compass and a map. They had to plot their own guiding markers and forge a path that would lead them to the finish point. Unfortunately, they got lost along the way as their bearings were off. Direction, and getting direction right are important.

Thank the Lord we are not left on our own to find our way, but God Himself dwells in us and with us by the Holy Spirit, and He has given His Word to us. He is our compass and so much more.

But what can happen for any believer is, at times, our minds can be pulled in all kinds of different directions leaving us feeling distracted, consumed, overwhelmed and sometimes even depressed.

Of course, all of us will have things going on in life that are demanding our attention, finances, family, friends, grief, hurt, betrayal, and the future to list a few. But let us be encouraged today by God’s word:

Colossians 3:1-4, If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

Paul in his letter to the Colossians encourages believers that having been raised with Christ, we are to seek the things that are above. This doesn’t mean that we should be so heavenly-minded that we are of no earthly use. But it does give us such a deep hope, that in all and every circumstance we face on earth, we can lift our minds above it all and focus on Christ, on heaven, on God’s bigger picture and story, on our security in Him because of His salvation, on our life that is hidden in Jesus that no one or nothing can ever snatch away. One day we as His bride will appear with Him in glory!

Be encouraged and comforted today to, set your minds on things that are above. Allow His peace to sweep over your being today. God cares and is in control. Let us realign our thinking according to His precious word. Be consumed by thoughts of Him and things concerning Him that will come to pass in your life.

Heavenly Father, I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from (You) the LORD, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2). Lord, I confess that my thinking can be misdirected and consumed at times with things that aren’t of You. Lord Jesus, I repent, please cleanse me with Your blood and give me Your mind. May the direction of my mind and heart be on things above as Your word encourages. Lord, thank you that I can experience real life in You, in my mind and heart, because of all that You have done for me. Amen.
