For by You I can run upon a troop;
And by My God I can leap over a wall. Psalm 18:29 (NSAB)
Time and again God has demonstrated His power in the midst of His people. Throughout their history, He has proven that He is stronger than every obstacle they ever faced. Today’s verse is all about running through troops and leaping over walls!
In today’s verse we see the words “by You”. By my God. Psalm 18 is a song of triumph in which David ascribes his victories to God. He exalts and magnifies Him throughout it and shows us how reliant he is on Him. For example:
The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge… Psalm 18:2 (ESVUK)
I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:3 (ESVUK)
…my cry for help came before Him, into His very ears. Psalm 18:6 (AMP)
For You have girded me with strength for battle;
You have subdued under me those who rose up against me. Psalm 18:39 (NKJV)
What is the wall before you that is posing insurmountable today? You can call upon God for help. Look to the One who is Your rock and fortress and deliverer. Allow your cries to come before Him, into his very ears. He will gird you with strength for battle so that you too can testify, “For by You I can run upon a troop; And by my God I can leap over a wall.” This is Paul’s assertion in Philippians 4:13:
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 (ESVUK)
The key words are “through Him”. He is the One who strengthens us, or, as the Greek suggests, He is the One who ‘pours strength into us’. He is the One who enables us to say, “I can.” ‘Can’ is a positive word. It focuses on what is possible, not impossible.
“…with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26 (NKJV)
I encourage you this week to look to Him and start believing, “By You I can… By my God I can… I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
